Bushkill Falls is a series
of eight privately owned waterfalls, the tallest of which cascades over
100 feet, located in Northeast
Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains in the United States. Beginning at
the headwaters of the Little Bushkill Creek, the water descends the mountain,
toward the Delaware River, forming Bushkill Falls, Bridal Veil Falls,
Bridesmaid Falls, Laurel Glen Falls, Pennell Falls, and three additional,
unnamed falls.
The main falls, named Bushkill
Falls, and the main canyon area are accessible via boardwalk and stairs.
Outside of the main canyon area the trails are mostly dirt and stone, with
boardwalks and bridges in certain areas.
The Pocono Mountains, (from
the Munsee word Pokawachne, which means “Creek Between Two Hills”) commonly
referred to as the Poconos, are a geographical, geological, and cultural
region in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
The Poconos are geologically part
of the Allegheny Plateau, like the nearby Catskills. The Poconos'
highest summit, Camelback Mountain (Big Pocono), reaches 2,133 feet, while
its lowest elevation is 350 feet in Pike County.
Bushkill Falls is nicknamed
"Niagara Falls of Pennsylvania." It was opened to the public in
1904 by Charles E. Peters and is still owned by the Peters family.
