These flints were were found in an alluvial and glacial till area of the eastern Kansas River. When a shard of this Kansas chalcedony flint is broken off it can be very sharp. The artifacts that can be found in the area of the Kansas River vary from pristine sharp or sort of sharp modern(maybe 100s to 1000s of years old) to smoothed dulled blades (maybe many 1000s of years old or more?). Many of the artifacts found at the Kansas River are similar to primitive stone age tools found; such as known Neanderthal flint tools verified in caves. It was recently verified that mammoth bones and human tools unearthed together in California in 1992 were in a geologic layer dating around 130,000 years of age.     It is reported that many modern Indian flint tools are found along some parts of the Kansas River before it reaches the Missouri River in Kansas City; also there are other historic places in Kansas City where an occasional artifact can be found. In my experience hunting stones at the Kansas River I have only found modern knapped flint tools a few times but more often find these more ancient strike spawl tools, in the frequently changing spoils of the Kansas River when water level is low enough to search.
