What is a CHROMOLITHOGRAPH ?

CHROMOLITHOGRAPHY is a color lithograph produced by preparing a separate stone by hand
for each color to be used, and printing one color in precise register over another.
Sometimes in the more intricate pictures, as many as 30 stones were used for a single complete print !

The technique was pioneered in the 1830's replacing the far more laborious method
of producing color prints by individually hand painting engravings.
Chromolithography became widely used only in the 1860's.
It was the most popular method of color reproduction until the end of the 1800's
when more fast and efficient modern techniques such as off-set printing rendered it obsolete.

Chromolthographs are highly prized and collected for their remarkable
technical accomplishment and their lush and brilliant colors.
