GRAIN FILLER

There are several different products and methods available for filling or darkening the grain on an ash shaft, this is by far the easiest and most effective. This is a quick drying thick liquid formula.

Quick Drying Time

Dries and can be sanded/re-applied usually in around 30mins.

Hard wearing, won’t fall out!

This is solvent based and hard wearing. It will penetrate, cling to and stay in the grain withstanding impact far better than typical off the shelf grain fillers.

Easy to Sand

This solution is easy to layer for deeper grains and also sands easily to achieve a smooth glass like finish over the grain

Long Shelf Life

Stored air tight the mixture won’t dry out or go off.

Application

Before starting WEAR GLOVES to avoid skin contact and wear a face mask throughout, especially when sanding. Make sure the cue is clean and sanded smooth to at least 1200 grit.

·           Shake well before using a clean rag, fine brush or sponge to apply over the grain of the shaft

·           Allow to dry before sanding smooth again in stages from 300/400 grit up to at least 1200

·           Re-apply additional layers if required, for deeper grain fills and repeat the sanding as above (I’d recommend 2000 for a final glass like finish)

·           Finish with several fine coats of cue finishing oil (see my other listings)

Drying times will vary and will ultimately depend on your working environment. Clean brushes/sponges using methylated spirit.

CUE OIL

A blended finishing oil I’ve concocted as a hobbyist woodworker and snooker fan. It’s not rocket science and blended from materials widely available, but a blend that is very effective and has its advantages over more commonly recommended oils.

Significantly Quicker Drying Time

Typically, ready to buff and polish in under an hour. Compared to the recommended several hours or overnight for other oils

Satin Finish

Most finishes I’ve experimented with leave a slightly glossy look once buffed and polished. This oil is perfect if you’re looking for a less glossy sheen like finish.

Less Darkening of the Shaft

Particularly with raw or boiled linseed oil, oiling often means making the cue darker in appearance. A clear finishing oil is near impossible to achieve but this oil is clearer when finished than any I have tested and won’t significantly darken the shaft.

Effective for Maple or Ash

Thoroughly tested on ash and maple but will no doubt be effective for less common shaft timbers such as pearwood and beech.

Application

·           Before starting WEAR GLOVES to avoid skin contact. Make sure the cue is clean, smooth and free from any obvious chalk deposits. In most cases a slightly damp cloth is enough to clean the shaft; a bit of white spirit can be used for more stubborn marks. If treating bare wood ensure the cue has been sanded smooth to at least 1200 grit.

·           Shake well before using a clean rag, cotton wool or paper towel to apply the oil covering the whole cue

·           Leave the oil to soak for 10 minutes before wiping away any excess oil

·           Allow to dry before buffing/polishing to a low lustre shine with a polishing cloth, cotton rag or towel

·           Applying several fine coats is far more effective and easier to work with than single heavy applications

·           Drying times will vary and will ultimately depend on your working environment.  Throughout my own testing I found the oil to dry pretty quickly, less than an hour in most cases. It won’t need several hours or leaving overnight before buffing/polishing as with other oils.
