Foamcore Builder's Star Wars DIY AT-AT Build Instructions and Templates

Do you love the idea of building your own Star Wars model AT-AT but feel you don't have the space, equipment, money or skills? Then this Instruction and Template guide is for you!

This 90-page book includes step-by-step instructions and templates for you to build your own scale model AT-AT out of inexpensive Foam and Poster Board using a craft knife at your kitchen table or small workspace. Video instructions are available at: https://youtu.be/lXF0V6kHdmM for those that want a little extra guidance on their build.

Pictures pages from the book with the last four pictures of a model constructed using the templates (the model is not included in this sale).

There are lots of different materials and techniques for building props and replicas, from styrene, wood and EVA (foam) to MDF and balsa. Construction tools are as diverse as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining power tools and hand tools.

So why work with Foam Board and Poster Board? To me the answer is easy: accessibility, flexibility and cost. Not everyone has access, skills or budget to work in 3D printing or other types software-based design and creation. And while power tools are fun and very versatile, they can be expensive, dangerous, messy and are not an option for people living in smaller spaces.

Most importantly, the builds are fun and rewarding and the results can be outstanding.

These instructions are similar to those for Lego kits, starting with building sub-assemblies, then combining sub-assemblies into larger modules. Color coding is used to specify materials and line styles indicate how a piece is to be cut, folded or placed.

Templates in this packet are scaled to print on 8”x11” paper and will generate a finished AT-AT model approximately 18” tall. Templates can be scaled up or down to create a larger or smaller model. Assuming your building at the scale of these templates and instructions (printed at 8.5” x 11”) you will need:
  • 3 24” x 36” ¼” Foam Board sheet
  • 1 24” x 36” Poster Board sheet
  • 1 can spray adhesive
  • Cutting matt
  • X-Acto knife/craft knife with at least 12 spare blades
  • 4 oz Black Acrylic or Black Spray-paint
  • 4 oz White Acrylic or White Spray-paint
  • 4 oz Gray Acrylic paint or Gray Spray Primer
  • 1 Matt Clear Coat Spray-paint
  • 1 Paint brush
  • 1 disposable cup
  • 1 large Paperclip
  • 1 metal coat hanger
  • 1 ruler/straight edge) optional
This is a fun project that yields fantastic results. Give it a try or give it as gift to a Star Wars fan you love.
