This figurine was made by Richard Klemm between 1891 and 1914, according to the mark. Klemm had a studio in Dresden, Germany, from 1869 to 1949. In 1883, in response to the exciting developments happening all around them, four prominent ceramic decorators (Richard Klemm, Donath & Co., Oswald Lorenz, and Adolph Hamann) registered the famous blue crown Dresden mark, and the widely popular “Dresden style” was born. The style they employed was a mixture of Meissen and Vienna flower and figure painting.
The girl is wearing comfortable brown Mary Jane shoes, but carries a pair of gold-trimmed pink-purple pumps in her hand. She wears a red full skirt. Her blouse and pinafore are buff trimmed in gold. The blouse has a ruffle at the throat. She wears a snug-fitting black bodice over the blouse. Her blue headscarf has a subtle white pattern, from under which her strawberry-blonde hair is visible. The young man is wearing black lace-up brogans, a bit worn at the toe. He wears a blue button-up shirt over black short pants. A blue handkerchief flaps from his pocket. His maroon vest has a gold pattern. His brown coat is slung over one shoulder. His right arm rests on the young lady’s shoulder. He too has strawberry-blond hair, visible under his brown hat. His necktie blows jauntily in the breeze.
