Monson is a town in Piscataquis County, Maine, in an area generally known as the Moosehead Lake Region, to which Monson is sometimes considered a gateway.  It is the last town located on the Appalachian Trail at the beginning, or end, of the Hundred-Mile wilderness. It is not uncommon to see many hikers in town resting before or after their trip into the Wilderness and several lodging places in town cater directly to these hikers.
The first settler came to the area in 1816 after being here the previous fall to clear trees out for a settlement.  The town was founded in 1822.  Monson pond is a 341-acre lake that is northeast of and close to Monson.  The Real Photo Card was published by “Roy M. Hescock” and printed by “Underwood & Underwood, New York.”  It is in good condition with minor wear and a clear image with either a reflection on the lake or some minor soiling.  The reverse is also clean.
Underwood & Underwood, founded by photographers Elmer and Burt Underwood in Ottawa Kansas.  They would move their main office to New York City in 1897 and later opened other branches in Toronto, and London.  In 1910, they began supplying photos for newspapers and postcard publishers and also publisher under their own name.  The firm was sold to Keystone View Co. in 1921.  I found other cards published by Roy M. Hescock but no information.

The colors on the images are a more neutral light sepia than the scan
