ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is an Absolutely Beautiful Hand-Colored Restrike Circa 1970’s-80’s Intaglio Aquatint Engraving of a Humorous Allegorical Scene of an Aristocratic Anthropomorphic Monkey in 18th C. Dress with His Monkey Family or Friends titled, “The Travelled Monkey” (AKA “The Monkey Who Had Seen The World”), after the original 1827 painting by the world famous listed painter ‘Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, RA’ (English, 1802-1873) and after the original 1859 engraving by the engraver ‘Huffam’ (British, either A.M. Huffam act.1818-1855, or T.W. Huffam act.1825-1856).

About the Original Painting: The painting was inspired by John Gay’s Fables of the “Monkey Who Had Seen The World”, and is in the permanent collection of the Guildhall Art Gallery, London. See Poem Below. “John Gay’s fable tells the story of a monkey who travels to “bring politer manners home,” is captured, serves a lady, becomes refined, and then escapes to join his fellows….In the tale from Fables the monkey goes on to recommend flattery, malice, wit, and scandal as a recipe for worldly success…Landseer turned freely to fable as a source for his anthropomorphic subjects. Monkeys, long symbols of folly, cruelty, cunning, vice, and perverseness, had an especial attraction for him…The hero of the fable is dressed in elegant eighteenth-century costume, with a cockaded hat, and tiewig, cravat and bow tie, gloves and cane, and a miniature of his mistress hung on a ribbon. The gold epaulets suggest that the costume is a form of livery. Most of the monkeys are rhesus macaques, although the one in the background is closer to a brown capuchin, and the one on the right, taking snuff and about to sneeze, looks like a baboon. The trees provide a framing device, isolating the central monkey against a distant view of the city, from which he has evidently traveled to join friends.” (Quoted excerpts from: Sir Edwin Landseer, by Richard Ormond, Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Tate Gallery, London, 1981)

Publisher & Print Info: The publisher of this Restrike Engraving is the famous Thomas Ross Collection, Berkshire, England whose internal inventory number ‘H129’ and other inventory number ‘9835’, appears hand written in pencil lower right in the outer margin corner. The Engraving is a modern Restrike by the well-known UK studio & workshop of the Thomas Ross Collection, Berkshire, England who have a long history of producing some of the world's finest hand-crafted etchings and engraved prints. The company is something of a legend in the art trade, comprising what is thought to be the world's largest single collection of engraved copper and steel “intaglio” printing plates, and the majority of plates in the collection are in excess of one hundred years old, and some examples date back to the early 1700’s providing the firm with an artistic heritage that now spans four centuries. The printed title, artist name and engraver’s name are in script, which appear in the lower plate margin, and was a very lightly struck plate impression with very faint lettering and some illegible text especially with Landseer’s text line, but technically reads as best as I can make out, ‘Painted by Sir Edwin Landseer R.A.’, as appears printed very tiny lower left just under the image, ‘Engraved by Huffam’, as appears printed lower right respectively, and the title appears lower right in the plate margin with bigger script text. The Engraving is on a very nice heavy-weight cream-colored wove paper stock with nice ample margins.

Size & Condition: The size with wide margins is 25-1/8” x 26-13/16”, Plate size is 17-3/4” x 19-3/8”, Image size is 13-1/8” x 15-5/8”. The Engraving is in Excellent Popular condition for with exquisite rich hand-coloring. This piece has been in a drawer in our archives amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family directly from Thomas Ross long ago (over 30+ years at least), and hasn’t seen the light-of-day in all this time. This will make the perfect addition to any Landseer, Anthropomorphic or Monkey art collection. The outer margins of the photo below were cropped out somewhat to feature the artwork & detail more. No tears and no foxing evident. Extremely minimal (only a handful or so) of very slight & small crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area, which are only noticeable from behind and aren’t worth mentioning. Other minimal slight & small creases here & there in the outer margin areas and a few in a couple outer margin corners. No real or significant toning of the paper stock from age (negligible). This ‘Restrike’ engraving has never been framed, which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival wood/cardboard backing materials, matburn or lightfade.

The hairy sylvans round him press
Astonish’d at his strut and dress.
Some praise his sleeve; and others glote
Upon his rich embroider’d coat;
Has dapper periwig commending,
With the black tail behind depending;
His powder’d back, above, below,
Like hoary frost, or fleecy snow.

EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) to contact us with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it.

COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!

Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
