In the early 1930s American readers were first introduced to "the most famous private investigator in the United States" by author Rex Stout as originally featured in dozens of novels and short stories. As his popularity soared, the fictional Nero Wolfe naturally moved to dramatic radio in 1943, where audiences enjoyed an eight year run of the show. Hundreds of episodes were produced, though only a few have survived the ages. Born in Montenegro before the turn of the century, Wolfe recounts his childhood as a slim, fit and daring lad who spied for the Austrian Empire before World War I, but had a change of heart when the war began. After spending some time in Europe and North Africa, he came to the United States where he developed a penchant for raising orchids high atop his New York City Brownstone on West 35th Street. Wolfe was multilingual, brilliant and apparently self-educated. At 285 pounds though, he was obviously over weight, which should be no surprise since drinking beer throughout the day and eating were his passions; second only to his orchids and solving mysteries. As a private investigator, Wolfe was a detective genius though he never left his house to solve a mystery. Instead, he employed his assistant Archie Goodwin to do all of the legwork, collecting clues, interviewing witnesses and visiting the crime scenes. The radio show is expertly written by Louis Vittes. Each episode will leave you guessing to the very end. If you like mysteries, you love Nero Wolfe!
