Written and created exclusively by Paul Rhymer, Vic & Sade was a regular 15-minute radio broadcast from 1932 to 1944, then intermittently until 1946 before being adapted for television in 1949 and again in 1957. Vic & Sade became one of the most popular series of its kind during its 14-year run, earning critical and popular success: According to Time Magazine, Vic & Sade had seven million devoted listeners in 1943 despite the ongoing war, short format and lack of a continuing storyline. The central characters known as “radio’s home folks,” were accountant Victor Rodney Gook (Vic), ably played by Art Van Harvey, his wife Sade (Bernadine Flynn), and their adopted son Rush (Bill Idelson). The cast presented the storylines with ease and naturalness, and Ryhmer’s humorous dialogue was delivered with a subtleness that made even the most outrageous events see commonplace and normal.
