Perry Mason
Old Time Radio Shows
Defender of Human Rights; Champion of all those who seek justice

Nearly everyone is familiar with Raymond Burr who for ten years starred as CBS television’s Perry Mason. But not as many people know that the original Perry Mason began in the 82 hard-hitting novels of Erle Stanley Gardner. Radio's Perry Mason was very different from these other two mediums. This show was on the air five times a week on CBS at 2:15 pm, sandwiched between The Second Mrs. Burton and Lone Journey and was sponsored by "Tide, the amazing washday miracle." In other words, it was a soap opera!

Like most soap operas of its day, the show ran a very long time – 12 years! Everyday from October 1943 to December 1955 housewives across America would tune in to hear the infamous “Defender of Human Rights; Champion of all those who sought justice”. Many actors played Mason over the years, including Barlett Robinson, Santos Ortega, Donald Biggs, and John Larkin. His secretary, Della Steet, was the voice of Gertrude Warner, and later, Jan Miner and Joan Alexander. The radio show had several writers over the years, though never Gardner himself. Although he enjoyed royalties from every episode, Gardner had very little creative control over the show and disliked the popular series. So many other script writers handled this task, including Ruth Borden and Irving Vendig.

Unlike the television attorney, the radio Mason wasn't in the courtroom much. On radio he was usually knocking down doors with Lt. Tragg, a twist from the television series where Mason and Tragg were often at odds with each other, each presenting opposite theories of the crime. But since this was a soap opera, there was little time wasted on tangling testosterone. In a typical episode, Mason and Tragg would try to capture killer Bill Barker. But just as they’d knock on his door, the announcer would break in with: "Let's join Lt. Tragg's wife, Harriet, as she says to her neighbor, Martha...." in typical soap opera fashion. The next few minutes would have Harriet and Martha discussing whether Martha should remarry after the death of her husband in WWII. Mason and Tragg would return only for the lead-in to the closing Tide commercial – to get listeners to tune in the next day, of course!

For those few who love detectives in a soap opera, these 243 episodes are a must-have for any collection!
