What is KDF? Kinetic Degradation Fluxion (KDF) is a high-purity copper-zinc formulation. KDF uses a basic chemical process which is known as redox (oxidation/reduction). This chemical process removes iron, chlorine, mercury, lead, and hydrogen sulfide from water supplies and is used in pretreatment, primary treatment, and wastewater applications. KDF media supplement or replace existing technologies to dramatically extend system life, reduce heavy metals, microorganisms, scale, lower total cost, and decrease maintenance. How does KDF work? The KDF redox process works by exchanging electrons with contaminants which converts many contaminants into harmless components. Redox involves the transfer of electrons between two molecules which changes these molecules into different elements. The loss of electrons can change contaminants into less harmful, or even harmless, elements. Some harmful contaminants are electrochemically bound to the KDF media while others are converted to harmless components, such as chlorine to chloride. KDF-55 Media Reduces: Chlorine Taste & Odor, Heavy Metal Removal and Bacteria A KDF-55 filter media is made of finely granulated zinc and copper alloys. When water passes through the media, the combination of these two alloys in the media produces the chemical reaction of redox (Oxidation-Reduction). Redox involves the transfer of electrons between two molecules. Atoms with a positive charge are attracted to the negative charge of the zinc, while atoms with a negative charge are attracted to the positive charge of the copper. In the KDF process, electrons are taken from harmful contaminants, like chlorine, which is then changed into the harmless, water-soluble chemical chloride when it loses an electron. KDF55 media uses the redox method to remove chlorine, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and metals like lead, arsenic, aluminum, mercury, and cadmium from water.
