Original early 20th-century watercolour painting of a classic English rural scene. It shows a cluster of thatched cottages with prominent chimneys, a foreground pond or stream with reflections, trees, shrubs and a warm pink-orange sky suggesting late afternoon or early evening light. The loose, atmospheric handling of washes is typical of many competent amateur or lesser-known British watercolourists working around the Edwardian period. Signed and dated lower left “H.H. 1913” (or very similar monogram/initials – the signature is clear as initials plus the date). The work is on paper, presented in a dark wooden frame with a yellow/gold mount (mat). Measurements • Aperture / sight size: 21 cm wide × 15.5 cm high • Overall framed size: 38 cm wide × 32 cm high Condition The watercolour itself is in good condition for its age, with the usual light age toning. No major tears, stains or losses are visible in the painted area. The mount shows some natural discoloration and minor marks consistent with age. The frame is solid dark wood. The reverse has the original brown paper backing (with the expected tears and losses of age), hanging cord, and a small later label. A charming, ready-to-hang example of traditional British cottage landscape watercolour from 1913. Ideal for collectors of rural or cottage subjects, or simply as attractive period wall art.
