Up for sale is a stunning, highly collectible piece of American haberdashery history: a vintage 1980s Robert Talbott paisley necktie, custom-made for the legendary high-end clothing retailer M.S. McClellan & Co..
History & Heritage:
Founded in 1966 in Knoxville, Tennessee, M.S. McClellan & Co. quickly grew into an Esquire Magazine "Best of Class" traditional clothier. During the menswear boom of the mid-1980s, the boutique formed elite private-label partnerships with premier makers, including California's iconic Robert Talbott. This specific tie features a rare factory anomaly—the woven custom keeper tag reads "Ms. McClellan & Co." rather than "M.S.", making it an amazing conversation piece for vintage menswear purists.
Premium Craftsmanship:
This tie is a true testament to old-school quality. The textile is 100% premium silk that was hand-printed in Italy, giving the intricate paisley pattern an incredible depth of color and a soft, supple hand-feel that modern machine-printed silk cannot replicate. It was then shipped to California where it was fully hand-sewn by Robert Talbott artisans.
Original Selling Price:
During the 1980s, a custom, hand-printed Italian silk Robert Talbott tie of this tier retailed as a premier luxury item. Adjusted for inflation, its original price tag would push past $100 to $150 today.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. No stains, pulls, or fabric degradation. The silk retains its gorgeous luster and structural drape. The only flaw is on the back side of the tail. Stitching has come undone, but should be easily repairable. Shown in photos.
