The F-104S Starfighter was the ultimate, final production version of the iconic Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.Built under license by Aeritalia for the Italian Air Force, the F-104S was specifically upgraded as an all-weather interceptor. It holds a unique legacy as the only variant of the "Missile with a Man in It" to carry medium-range, radar-guided missiles.

Key Specifications & Design UpgradesRadar-Guided Weaponry: Unlike earlier versions (such as the F-104C) which only utilized short-range heat-seekers, the F-104S was designed to fire AIM-7 Sparrow beyond-visual-range missiles. To fit the heavy radar and guidance electronics required for the Sparrow, Italy famously removed the internal M61 Vulcan cannon on the initial interceptor variants.

Upgraded Engine: It was fitted with a more powerful General Electric J79-GE-19 turbojet engine, allowing it to sustain a top speed of Mach 2.2.Increased Payload:

The airframe added two extra hardpoints, bringing the total to nine. This allowed it to carry nearly double the external ground-attack payload of the preceding F-104G variant.Service Life: The F-104S served the Italian Air Force reliably through the Cold War, undergoing further modernization (the ASA and ASA-M packages) before being officially retired in 2004, closing the global military chapter of the Starfighter.
