This 1:200 scale model depicts a Bombardier (de Havilland Canada) Dash 8 Q400 of QantasLink, registration VH-QOW, in the special “Taronga Western Plains Zoo” livery. The zoo, in the Australian state of New South Wales, opened on February 28, 1977, about five kilometres west of the city of Dubbo, to give Sydney’s Taronga Zoo – some 400 kilometres away – additional room for large species such as elephants and antelopes that its city site could not accommodate. Built on 300 hectares of a former World War II army camp, it was one of the first zoos in Australia to adopt an open-range concept: instead of fences, concealed moats separate the animals from one another and from visitors, creating a safari-like experience. Since January 21, 2008, the park has officially been named “Taronga Western Plains Zoo” to underline its link to the Taronga Conservation Society. QantasLink has united the Qantas Group’s regional airline brands since 2002 – among them Sunstate Airlines, Eastern Australia Airlines and the franchise operator National Jet Systems – and traces its roots to Qantas’s October 1993 acquisition of Australian Airlink; it still connects major cities such as Sydney, Brisbane and Perth with remote parts of Australia today. The backbone of its turboprop fleet since the 2000s has been the Dash 8 Q400: the family originates with de Havilland Canada, whose first Dash 8 flew on June 20, 1983, as a development of the Dash 7 that traded away that aircraft’s extreme short-field capability for two considerably more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada PW100-series engines. The stretched Series 400 (Q400) followed in 1999 and entered scheduled service in 2000; depending on seating configuration it carries 68 to 90 passengers and remains the mainstay of QantasLink’s regional fleet today.
