This beautiful set of small, thick, dimpled paper notes is certainly one of the highlights of the Notgeld era. Each set of 10 notes spells UHLENKÖPER with the letters on the owls.
The rare bundle wrapper tells the story behind this nickname for the townspeople of Uelzen: "A citizen of Uelzen had purchased a chicken in a sack, but when they opened the sack at home, they found an owl instead of a chicken in the sack. For that reason, the people of Uelzen are still known today by the nickname "Uhlenköper" ["owl-buyers" in the local dialect]. (High German: Eulenkäufer)."
