Gilbert’s First Voyage and Other Stories — M. C. Halifax — 1875

A very attractive Victorian children’s story book, published by Groombridge and Sons, London, in 1875.

Gilbert’s First Voyage and Other Stories by M. C. Halifax is an illustrated collection of adventure and moral stories for younger readers, headed by the maritime tale Gilbert’s First Voyage.

Binding: Particularly attractive original brown cloth-covered hardback with elaborate black embossed decoration, gilt and blue title detailing, floral motifs and a sailing-ship vignette to the front board. Further decorative tooling and lettering runs along the spine.

Illustrations: Illustrated throughout with detailed black-and-white engravings, including maritime and adventure scenes and landscape views.

Provenance: The front endpaper retains an original prize label from St Paul’s Church Sabbath School, Session 1877–8, awarded to Thomas M. Lewis. This provides particularly nice contemporary provenance for a book published only a few years earlier.

Condition: A genuine approximately 150-year-old book showing expected signs of age and use. There is rubbing and wear to the boards, spine ends and corners, together with age-related toning, occasional spotting and marks internally. The decorative front board remains especially attractive, with the gilt and coloured detailing still displaying very well. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

An appealing piece of Victorian children’s publishing, combining maritime adventure, period illustrations, a highly decorative original binding and dated 1870s Sunday-school provenance.
