Offered is an original Civil War headquarters letter dated November 11, 1862, at Indianapolis, Indiana, and signed by Major General John Love of the Indiana Legion.

The letter is addressed to Colonel John S. Williams, commanding the 63rd Indiana Infantry. Love discusses damaged tents assigned to four companies of the 100th Indiana Infantry and arranging for the regiment to receive good replacement tents.

The date is especially noteworthy: historical records show that the 100th Indiana departed Indiana for Memphis, Tennessee, on November 11, 1862—the same day this letter was written.

Colonel Williams endorsed the lower-left corner, writing, “Referred to Qr. Master Redmond—I see no objection,” followed by his signature and rank. The document therefore contains the signatures and handwriting of two identified Indiana Civil War officers.

John Love was a West Point graduate, Mexican-American War veteran, Union officer, and Major General of the Indiana Legion. He later commanded Indiana forces opposing Morgan’s Raiders during their 1863 raid.
