Star-quad cable is a specialized four-conductor electrical cable designed for superior electromagnetic interference (EMI) rejection. How It Works
Instead of using two insulated conductors to carry a balanced audio signal, a star-quad cable uses four conductors precisely wound in an "X" or star configuration around a central core. 
To wire a star-quad cable (for instance, into a standard 3-pin XLR connector), opposing conductors are tied together at both ends of the cable: 
  • Conductors at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock are combined to form the positive (+) leg.
  • Conductors at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock are combined to form the negative (-) leg.
Because opposing pairs share the exact same geometric center along the entire length of the cable, any proximity noise (like interference from stage lighting dimmers, power transformers, or AC power lines) hits all four conductors equally. This creates a virtually perfect common-mode signal that the receiving gear cancels out completely.
