Born in Wyoming, David Martin studied art in Woodstock, New York, before launching his career as a professional illustrator in New York City. There, he created advertisements for Barney's and contributed artwork to magazines like Esquire and GQ, while also designing book covers for St. Martin's Press and its Stonewall Inn Editions line. 

In 1983, Martin relocated to Los Angeles, where he became a regular contributor to The Advocate and illustrated their Guide to Gay Los Angeles for the 1984 Olympics. His distinctive style is widely admired for blending Old Master techniques with the sharp precision of photorealism. His current whereabouts are unknown.
