Rare Antique Japanese Lacquered Woven Basket Boxes, a matched set of 3. Black with vermilion interiors. Highly decorative storage. c. 1850–1900

A matched graduated set of three beautifully aged Japanese storage boxes, expertly lacquered over a woven bamboo core with deep black exterior lacquer and glowing vermilion red interiors. These were once practical household vessels and today make striking sculptural storage objects for design-forward interiors.

A likely timeline dates them from Edo to early Meiji period, c. 1850–1900, their hand-woven base having been layered with traditional urushi lacquer.  The exterior retains soft crane-wing tool marks and surface patina, the interiors lacquered in traditional red lacquer consistent with Japanese refinement.

The strong contrast of the saturated vermilion interior against deep black lacquer is one of the design highlights. As is the rustic handmade quality with subtle irregularities lending authentic character.

Condition. Genuine signs of age and use consistent with 19th c. lacquer ware: surface wear, subtle cracking and uneven lacquer thickness all contributing to authentic antique character.

Sold as a matched set of three with original lids, honest wear and no modern restoration. Please look carefully at the images as they form part of the description.
