This engraving represents the characteristic inflorescence of Typha, showing a compact cylindrical mass (female spadix) topped by a more slender male spike. The image shows the main mass made up of innumerable tightly packed achenes and the upper part made up of male flowers, while detached elements, marked with letters, show reduced floral details. Suggested in particular are the stamens and anthers, spikelets and the comatose down (bristles) which envelops the achenes and facilitates their dispersal by the wind. Typha (massette, “the mass”) is an emergent hydrophytic macrophyte whose unisexual inflorescence and coma-shaped achenes are central adaptive traits for the colonization of malaria environments.
