This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 8½ x 6¾ inches (215x170mm).

It shows an American armored vehicle, which appears to be an M8 Greyhound, driving down a street during the liberation of Cherbourg, France, in World War II. Several US soldiers are riding on top of the vehicle.

On the crowded sidewalk to the left, French civilians are watching and cheering as the vehicle passes. A French flag hangs from a window of one of the buildings lining the street. The reverse of the photograph has a pasted typed caption which reads: "CHERBOURG IS LIBERATED. An American tank rumbles down a street in Cherbourg while French civilians on the sidewalk cheer.

PIC-CBI Staff Photo by Berton Boyce SERVICED BY LONDON OWI TO LIST D". The number "8574" is handwritten in pencil, and "OWIL 28374" is stamped, presumably relating to the 30th anniversary in 1974. OWI refers to the Office of War Information, a United States government agency during WWII.
