There are plenty of Spanish composers who wrote in nationalist or neoclassical styles (some, like de Falla, were fluent in both), but finding a Spanish equivalent to the sumptuous late-romanticism of Strauss or Tournemire isn't so easy -- unless you know the music of Conrado Del Campo (1878-1953), that is. His symphonic poem Granada op.31 is a 23-minute tapestry of sweeping climaxes, nationalist evocations, and more than a few orientalisms. It's the leadoff work on this rare 2001 RTVE disc, performed by Orquesta Sinfonica de RTVE under the direction of Miguel Angel Gomez Martinez. They then proceed to the ten-minute Zambra en El Albayzin from Impresiones de Granada by Ángel Barrios (1882-1964), a swirly, shimmery nocturnal work that builds into a muy Spanish dance. We change conductors and moods for the next work; Enrique Garcia Asensio takes over the podium and harpsichordist Rafael Puyana joins the orchestra for the 20-minute Concerto del Albayzin of Xavier Montsalvatge (1912-2002), a nervous, medium-chromatic work from 1977 that, like most mature Montsalvatge, has Ginastera and early Lutoslawski as its strongest influences. We return to Romanticism for the final work, the 1889 Los Gnomos de la Alhambra by Ruperto Chapi (1851-1909), a three-movement suite a little longer than the concerto, which has the same sort of Spain-through-a-French-lens feel as Ravel's Rapsodie espagnole in the first two movements, and Lalo's Symphonie espagnole in the finale. A well-packed disc of nice rarities; recommended!
