The Bassoon Concerto in G minor of Johann
Melchior Molter (1696-1765) has one foot in the perky, lyrical galante
style and one in the more ornamented Handelian Baroque style. It's the
odd work out on this 1996 Naxos CD, as the other three pieces are not
only not in that style, but not in the Classical style that followed it.
Well, the Fantasia in B-flat Major of Conradin Kreutzer
(1780-1849, no relation to Beethoven's dedicatee) does have some Haydn
to it, but the other two show the influence of Beethoven and also
Rossini - the Bassoon Concerto in F Major op.44 of Peter Joseph von Lindpaintner (1791-1856) and the Variations and Rondo in B-flat Major op.57
of Jan Vaclav Kalliwoda (1801-1866). Albrecht Holder is the bassoonist;
Nicolás Pasquet leads the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra.
Disc, booklet, and case are in excellent condition.
