Welcome! For sale is this old Japanese burlwood box and cover. There are two holes at top and bottom to be strung, so I assume this is a large tonokotsu or tobacco box. It is appx. 4 1/2" tall and 5 1/2" wide. Cover fits on a bit irregularly and does not sit totally flush. Interior lacquered red and shows numerous areas of loss and touchups/repair. The front was once inlaid with characters. The "no" character appears to be original, but the "dai" is missing and the two pieces at lower left (forming "I" in Hiragana) are replaced and have some black paint over them.
