American Numismatic Society (ANA) History

The American Numismatic Association is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to educating and encouraging people to study and collect coins and related items. The ANA serves the academic community, collectors and the general public with an interest in numismatics. Each year, the ANA hosts one of the largest numismatic shows in the world – the World’s Fair of Money - at a location in the continental United States. The ANA World’s Fair has been held every year since 1891 with exception of 1942 to 1945 (the United States’ inclusion into World War II) and 2020 (Covid Pandemic Shutdown).

Officially Approved ANA Show Panda

The year’s ANA Show Panda Proof is officially approved by the American Numismatic Association (ANA) and struck for the 135th ANA World’s Fair of Money held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Exclusivity / Official ANA Show Panda Release

The 2026 ANA Show Pandas series is being released with a very limited mintage. In addition, this year’s ANA Show Panda series is the only one officially recognized and authorized by the American Numismatic Association for the 2026 World’s Fair of Money show.

Imagery

Obverse. The obverse features a whimsical image of a Panda bear working at a Pittsburgh steel mill facility (a tie to the city’s strong “Steel City” roots), the ANA’s official crest, date, specification information, and an America 250 privy mark.

Reverse. The reverse features a unique commemorative design from famed Chinese Panda coin designer Tong Fang, the artist who also created to reverse of the 2020 ANA Show Panda Proof. Pittsburgh is known as the “City of Bridges” due to the number of spans that cross-cross the city’s three major river systems. The most famous of these bridges are the beautiful golden “Three Sisters” that span the Allegheny River. Ms. Tong’s depiction of “The Sisters” captures the essence of this city’s spectacular urban bridge scenery.

The 2026 ANA Show Pandas series is being released with a very limited mintage (see specifications table above), and GovMint is the only distributor for this handsome medal series. In addition, this year’s ANA Show Panda series is the only one officially recognized and authorized by the American Numismatic Association for the 2026 World’s Fair of Money show.

“Lucky-8” Mintages

Because the number “8” is considered lucky in Chinese culture, this year’s 1-ounce Show Panda release includes a “Lucky 8” mintage of 1,888!

.999 Silver/ Uncirculated Finish

Each piece will be struck in .999 fine silver and feature a stunning Brilliant Uncirculated finish.

Three Sisters Gold Color

To further accentuate the spectacular golden color on the Three Sisters bridge, that portion of the design on the reverse has been colored in gold ink to help capture this unique visual element.

Famous “Show Panda” Series

China released its famous Panda series as a gold coin in 1982 and as a silver coin in 1983. Since then, this annual issue has featured a new Panda design each year – which is one of the reasons Panda coinage is among the most revered numismatic collectibles the world over. The popularity of the annual issues has spawned a bevy of other coin and medallic “Panda” designs since then that have offered the same allure to collectors worldwide.

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) / First Releases (FR) Designation

Premier specimens will be graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), the world’s largest Third-Party numismatic grading service. In addition, NGC will certify a portion of these commemorative pieces with a First Releases (FR) designation which means that the medals were received for grading at NGC’s facility within 30 days of the official release date.

ANA Convention Show Panda Release / Demand

This was launched at this year’s ANA Show Panda program at our World’s Fair of Money at the Pittsburgh convention. As with prior years, demand from collectors and dealers alike was high – especially given the last two times a “Show Panda” was planned for the ANA’s WFoM Pittsburgh events (2020 and 2023), it wasn’t available.

- 2020 – Covid pandemic caused the show to be cancelled

- 2023 – No official “Show Panda” commemorative was released due to approval delays.

China Mint Panda Designer Ms. Tong Fang

In addition to her work on the reverse designs for the 2020 and 2026 ANA Show Panda Proofs, Ms. Tong is renowned within the numismatic community for several of her Chinese commemorative coin designs as well as her 2019, 2021 and recent 2023 Panda coin designs. It is rumored that she has also been selected for the Panda coin design that will be released in 2027.
