Description
This Japanese Imari tea bowl and saucer are decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, iron-red enamel and touches of gold. The bowl shows a stylised garden with flowering branches, rockwork, a red fence and tied drapery. The saucer is painted with large floral medallions, peonies and scattered blossoms surrounding a central flower spray.
About Japanese Imari porcelain
Imari porcelain was produced around Arita and exported through the port of Imari. Its characteristic decoration combines underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red and gilding. During the Edo period, particularly in the late 17th and 18th centuries, it became highly fashionable in Europe.
