Here we have a very interesting cup and saucer decorated in Kakiemon style. After more than ten years of looking at and researching this type, however, we believe there is a real possibility that this set is actually Chinese rather than Japanese.
In our private collection we have several late 17th Chinese dishes decorated in a Japanese-inspired style with very similar backs, and the porcelain body of this cup and saucer also appears, in our opinion, more Chinese than Japanese.
It may therefore represent a late 17th-century Chinese interpretation of the highly fashionable Japanese Kakiemon style. It is an intriguing and still somewhat unresolved piece, and one that would certainly reward further research by its next owner.
