In the years 1940-1943 the Quinto Alpini took part in the Second World War with its three traditional battalions: "Morbegno", "Tirano" and "Edolo", on the western Alpine fronts (Battle of the Alps 1940), Greek campaign (1940 – 1941) e Italian Russian campaign (1942 – 1943), obtaining 2 gold medals for Military Valor. The battalions of the 5th will resist for fifty days of fighting in very harsh climatic and terrain conditions on Greek-Albanian soil. On Russian soil they participated in all the clashes that marked the terrible retreat of the Italian Army in Russia, distinguishing themselves in the clashes of Postojali, Warwarowka, where the "Morbegno" was annihilated, and in the Battle of Nikolaevka in which the “Tirano” stands out. Upon returning from the Russian campaign, as the Commander of the Regiment Colonel Giuseppe Adami wrote in the Agenda of 31 March 1943, 4130 men will be missing, dead, wounded, frozen and missing.
