1858 Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad Employee Pass – Pre-Civil War
Original November 1858 employee railroad pass issued by the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Rail Road. This is a genuine pre-Civil War railroad document used by employees traveling on company lines during the month listed.
The pass is issued to A. M. Tucker, identified as Superintendent’s Clerk – Car Road and Branches, and is signed by Jno. Campbell, Superintendent. Early employee passes like this were working documents and most were discarded after use, making surviving examples scarce today.
The Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad was one of the major early Midwest railroads and later became part of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway, which eventually joined the New York Central system.
