MPL115A2 I²C Barometric Pressure & Temperature Sensor Module

The MPL115A2 from Freescale is a compact, low-cost digital barometric pressure sensor designed for measuring atmospheric pressure in a wide range of electronics and embedded applications. It communicates through the I²C interface, making it easy to connect to Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi and other compatible microcontrollers.

The MPL115A2 is particularly well suited to basic barometric pressure measurement, weather monitoring and approximate altitude calculations. It offers a pressure resolution of approximately 1.5 hPa, making it a practical and economical solution where high-precision altitude measurement is not required.

The sensor also includes a basic internal temperature sensor. However, temperature accuracy is not specified in the sensor documentation, so the temperature measurement is best considered suitable for general-purpose applications rather than precision temperature sensing.

Pressure Sensor — Not a Precision Altimeter

The MPL115A2 provides approximately 1.5 hPa resolution, making it excellent for economical, general-purpose barometric pressure sensing. However, it is not intended as a precision altimeter. Changes in atmospheric weather conditions can also affect pressure-based altitude calculations, so accurate altitude measurement requires appropriate calibration and compensation.

If your project requires significantly higher pressure resolution and precision, a newer high-resolution pressure sensor would be more appropriate. For basic barometric pressure sensing and approximate altitude calculations, however, the MPL115A2 provides a simple and cost-effective solution.

Arduino Compatibility

The sensor is straightforward to use with Arduino and other platforms supporting I²C. Once connected to the I²C bus, software can read the pressure and temperature data and perform basic altitude calculations using the sensor's calibration information.

Please note: The module includes the MPL115A2 sensor, which is a lower-resolution device than the similarly named MPL3115A2. These are different sensors and should not be confused with each other.
