Offered for sale is a scarce Irving’s Wizard pivoting-system tobacco pipe, an unusual American pipe design dating to approximately 1909–1910.

The Irving’s Wizard is immediately recognizable by its unconventional construction. Rather than using a conventional fixed bowl arrangement, the briar bowl mounts within a mechanism that lets it pivot or swing outward for filling and lighting before returning to its smoking position.

This example retains several important identifying features, including the distinctive IRVING’S WIZARD eye emblem with B.P.O.E. lettering and the early “PAT. APP’D FOR” marking.

Period advertising for Irving’s Wizard described the design as incorporating a genuine French briar bowl with a vulcanized-rubber body and stem. The unusual system was designed around a bottom-draft airflow arrangement and incorporated an absorbent element intended to collect moisture during smoking.

The PAT. APP’D FOR marking is particularly interesting, as it indicates production during the early period of the Irving’s Wizard design while patent protection was still being sought.

The pipe has an unusually distinctive appearance and represents an interesting example of early experimentation in tobacco-pipe engineering.
