The Sony CDP-XA3ES is a member of Sony's ES series, the company's domestic high-end line, and was a ¥60,000 machine when it launched in 1994. Its heart is Sony's Current Pulse D/A converter, which expresses the pulse as a current rather than a voltage so that supply-voltage fluctuation is eliminated in principle, combined with a then-new full feed-forward digital filter that carries data which conventional filters had to discard. The transport sits in the centre of a rigid FB chassis to keep vibration away from the pickup, and both fixed and variable gold-plated line outputs are provided.
