This 1996 State of Georgia Department of Corrections badge was actually carried in connection with the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, held July 19 – August 4, 1996.
Unlike a traditional uniform badge, this example was specifically designed as a wallet badge, allowing Department of Corrections personnel to carry their Olympic identification badge with their credentials.
The gold-tone badge features an eagle at the top with “Department of Corrections” in blue enamel surrounding a special 1996 Centennial Olympic Games center. The center displays the Atlanta 1996 Olympic emblem, Olympic rings, “100,” and Atlanta 1996.
This was an actual agency badge associated with the Georgia Department of Corrections during the 1996 Olympic Games, rather than a standard souvenir or commercially produced Olympic collectible.
The Centennial Olympic Games brought together numerous federal, state and local agencies as part of the extensive security operation surrounding the Games. Special Olympic badges such as this were created for participating agencies, making them an unusual crossover between law-enforcement history and Olympic memorabilia.
A unique piece of Georgia Department of Corrections and 1996 Atlanta Olympic history.
