Antique c.1890 Scared-Head Hickory-Shaft Wooden Golf Club

A striking early wooden golf club dating to approximately circa 1890, featuring traditional scared-head construction with a wooden head joined to a hickory shaft.

The compact wooden head has a wonderful dark, aged patina and an unusual sole insert secured by three wooden pegs, together with distinctive contrasting bands immediately above the neck. These surviving construction details give the club considerable character and visual interest.

The original hickory shaft has unfortunately been cut down at the grip end, with the original grip no longer present. The club now measures approximately 33.8cm overall, with the head measuring approximately 9.5cm long × 4.6cm deep. There is also a noticeable gentle bow to the surviving shaft.

The precise original club type and maker have not been identified, and no maker's marking has been found. It is therefore being offered on the strength of its early construction and surviving period features rather than attributed to a particular maker.

Condition

A genuine old golf club showing considerable age and use. The wooden head has surface wear, marks, knocks and a well-developed patina. The three wooden sole pegs project very slightly in places. The hickory shaft has a gentle bow and, importantly, has been cut down considerably at the upper end, with the original grip absent. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.

Display & Collecting

Now much more suited to collection and display than play, this is a wonderfully atmospheric survivor from the early history of golf. Its small wooden head, aged timber, traditional construction and unusual detailing make it particularly appealing as a decorative piece.

It could make a superb display in a study, office, golf room, clubhouse, bar, hotel or golfing collection, either individually or alongside other early clubs and golfing memorabilia — an attractive tangible piece of golfing history with well over a century of age and character.

Postage & Packaging

Every golf club is carefully packaged to help ensure it arrives in the condition described in the listing.

The postage and packaging charge reflects some of the cost involved in sending your order, and not just the courier's delivery charge. It covers the cost of a golf club box selected to suit your club, protective packing materials and, of course, the courier service and in this case, appropriate insurance cover.

Careful packaging is an important part of the service I provide and helps ensure your club reaches you exactly as described.
