Suited to road bikes or touring bikes, this lovely 27 x 1 1/4 wheelset has Birmalux rims laced to Shimano HC-110 Large Flange Quick Release Hubs; the rear of which will take a 5/6 or 7 speed freewheel. Front spacing 96mm (actual 94mm) and rear spacing 126mm (actual 124mm).

Hailing from the 1970s/ 1980s, the wheels look great and work well. As expected from wheels of this age they aren’t perfect, but with a little fettling could be improved further. The bearings spin fine and are pretty smooth. They would however benefit from a quick re-grease. There is a slight wobble to both wheels, but nothing that couldn’t be ironed out with a bit of tweaking.

Both braking surfaces seem to have very little wear and there isn’t a gap when a straight edge is held against them (please see pictures).

The spokes do have some surface corrosion in places again which I have tried to show in the pictures.

The wheels are shod with tyres and inner tubes, however the tyres are past their best and need replacing… the tubes are holding air so I have left them on for added protection when shipping.

Prior to sale the wheels have been cleaned and degreased and are now ready to fit.

They would make a first class addition to a vintage bike build.
