A charming atmospheric scene of thatched cottages beside a sandy track, with a distinctive mast or crane structure, a small figure, and a moody cloudy sky. Typical of the artist’s Cornish and coastal village subjects.
Signed lower left “Eyres Simmons” in his characteristic hand.

About the artist
Charles Eyres Simmons (1872–1955) was a British watercolour painter of landscapes, harbours and coastal scenes. Born in Rainham, Kent, he later lived and worked in Herefordshire, Cornwall (including Ruan Minor on the Lizard), Devon, the Channel Islands and Hastings.
He studied under Hubert Coop and exhibited at the Dudley Gallery, Piccadilly, and in Liverpool between 1902 and 1914. He is listed in Johnson & Greutzner’s Dictionary of British Artists 1880–1940 and Jeremy Wood’s Hidden Talents. His work appears regularly at auction and is often signed in a distinctive, slightly difficult-to-read style.
