Antique Brass Pullman Type Railway Carriage Table Lamp British c.1920

Superb early 20th century British brass table lamp of Pullman / railway carriage type, believed to date from approximately the 1910s–1930s.

A particularly substantial example with a tall reeded brass column and broad circular base, measuring approximately 34–35cm high with a 15cm diameter base.

Of particular interest is the unusually heavy construction. Almost the entire underside of the base is occupied by a purpose-made cast-iron ballast, giving this relatively slender lamp exceptional stability. The casting incorporates three access apertures and a dedicated cable route through the central column and base.

This heavily ballasted, low-centre-of-gravity construction would have been particularly suitable for a free-standing lamp used in a moving railway carriage and is consistent with lamps generally described as Pullman / railway carriage types.

Fitted with an old switched brass bayonet lampholder clearly stamped BRITISH MADE, together with an intertwined manufacturer’s monogram within a shield. The exact manufacturer has not been positively identified.

Good antique condition with expected marks, tarnishing, oxidation and surface wear consistent with age and use. The exposed cast-iron ballast has age-related surface oxidation as photographed.

Attribution: The proportions, exceptionally heavy low-level ballast and construction are strongly suggestive of a lamp designed for a stable free-standing application such as railway carriage use. However, no Pullman car number or railway company marking has been found, therefore it is conservatively described as Pullman / Railway Carriage Type rather than being attributed to a particular railway company or carriage.

The electrical fitting and wiring have not been tested. Sold as an antique decorative item requiring inspection and, if necessary, rewiring by a suitably qualified person before connection to the mains.
