Vintage GPO BGT No.1 Telephone Exchange Relay Adjustment Tool Set 1960s

A superb and unusual British General Post Office telecommunications engineer’s precision tool set, contained within its original fitted leather wallet marked:

The set contains a fascinating selection of specialist GPO tools used for the maintenance and adjustment of electromechanical telephone exchange relays and associated equipment.

Essentially the watchmaker’s toolkit of the pre-digital telephone exchange – these precision tools allowed GPO engineers to adjust tiny relay springs, contacts, clearances and mechanisms within telephone exchange equipment.

Several tools retain particularly good original GPO markings, including:

The date markings indicate tools manufactured during the 1960s, including examples dated 1963, 1964 and 1967.

The unusual shapes of the individual tools reflect their highly specialised purpose, with various spring adjusters and precision tools designed for working on the delicate mechanical components of GPO telephone equipment.

A wonderful survivor from Britain’s pre-digital telecommunications network and a particularly evocative piece of original engineering equipment.
