The Ajustable – Unusual c.1940 Adjustable Multi-Loft Golf Club

A fascinating and unusually constructed early adjustable golf club, marked “The Ajustable” to the head.

The ingenious mechanism allows the head to be altered through a range of positions, effectively changing the club from a putter through to various iron and driving-iron configurations. The numbered adjustment settings and rotating head make this a particularly interesting example of early golf-club engineering.

Dating: I believe the head and adjustment mechanism date from around c.1940, although the exact year has not been established conclusively. The present True Temper steel shaft and grip may be later replacements, so I have not assumed that they are original to the head.

The club is approximately 39 inches long and is supplied with the distinctive adjustable head mechanism intact. The adjustment collar shows considerable age and wear, consistent with the club having seen use over many years.

Condition: The head remains in sound overall condition, with expected surface wear, loss of finish and signs of age, particularly around the adjustable mechanism and hosel area. The shaft is in good presentable condition and carries a True Temper marking. The grip is also in usable condition, although neither shaft nor grip is guaranteed to be original to the c.1940 head.

This is a very unusual and collectible piece of golf history, likely to appeal to collectors of early golf clubs, unusual sporting equipment and mechanically interesting golfing artefacts.
