Mount Washington in Winter, or The Experiences of a Scientific Expedition upon the Highest Mountain in New England, 1870–71

Boston: Chick and Andrews
1871
First Edition
An important illustrated account of the pioneering 1870–71 winter scientific expedition to the summit of Mount Washington, undertaken to conduct sustained meteorological observations under the famously extreme conditions of the White Mountains.
363 pages plus advertisements, illustrated with 14 full-page black-and-white plates. The illustrations include dramatic mountain and winter scenes as well as scientific instruments used by the expedition, including the anemometer and hygrodeik.
Of particular interest is the book's documentation of the recently completed Mount Washington Cog Railway, with an attractive illustrated railway plate showing the locomotive climbing toward the summit. The railway had opened only shortly before the expedition and was used in transporting supplies to the mountain.
The contents extend well beyond a conventional mountaineering narrative, with separate chapters devoted to photography, telegraphy, life at the summit, frostwork and clouds, wind, storms and the expedition's meteorological record. Much of the book consists of firsthand accounts of living and conducting scientific work on Mount Washington through the winter.
Original green cloth with gilt lettering and Mount Washington decoration. Binding remains tight and the gilt is quite attractive. Moderate exterior wear, principally at spine ends and corners; page edges have an old curved indentation. Some staining and scattered spotting internally. Old bookseller label from Littleton, New Hampshire, and pencil notation on front endpaper. Please see photographs for condition.
A particularly appealing intersection of White Mountains history, early American meteorology, scientific exploration and Mount Washington Cog Railway history.
