HOBONICHI TECHO 2027 Akiko Miyakoshi An Airport at Night Planner Cover JAPAN NEW
“An Airport at Night” as a Planner Cover This cover features a lithograph printed with four colors of ink: yellow, blue, khaki, and black. Miyakoshi’s sketchbook still contains the rough sketches that served as the basis for this work. The black of the sky and the black of the buildings—we faithfully captured the subtle difference between them based on the original artwork. ── The original and Cousin-sized covers we created together this time, “An Airport at Night,” are now complete. Miyakoshi Wow, it’s really lovely. ── A sense of stillness, warmth, and a touch of loneliness… I think we’ve created a wonderful cover that evokes a variety of emotions. Miyakoshi Thank you very much. I drew these illustrations—including “An Airport at Night” and weeks’ “Once, in Spring”—because I simply wanted to draw them, but since they didn’t have a story yet, I hadn’t been able to publish them as picture books. I was so happy that they were able to use them. ── To turn them into planner covers, we needed to adjust the original artwork to a wider, horizontal format, but you kindly said, “In that case, I’ll redraw them.” Miyakoshi Yes. ── In the end, it was essentially a brand-new piece—or rather, they recreated it as a lithograph—so we were able to achieve the best possible balance and sense of scale. As for how to bring out the subtle difference in black tones between the sky and the buildings, we worked through a process of trial and error with the printing staff to finalize it. Miyakoshi The colors came out so beautifully; it’s wonderful. ── Here’s the message Miyakoshi included with “An Airport at Night”: On my way back from a fun trip, I saw this view out the window as I was getting off the plane. Watching people relaxing at the gate, I thought, “Ah, their journey is just beginning,” and with a touch of envy, I let my imagination run wild wondering where they were headed. So this was a scene you saw on your way home from a trip. Miyakoshi Yes. I drew this based on my memory of the view I saw at Haneda Airport on our way back from a family trip to Ishigaki Island last summer. ── I was totally convinced it was an airport in some faraway country on the other side of the globe! But looking at it, it gives me the feeling of recalling an airport I visited somewhere long ago. Miyakoshi I’m so glad to hear you say that. People often read my picture books and tell me, “I’ve actually been to a hotel just like the one in this book.” ── I totally get that. It’s like a scene from a distant memory, or a view I’ve seen in a dream… Miyakoshi That might be because I don’t draw scenes exactly as I saw them. I change the angle or the background from what I actually saw. I definitely feel the same way—that it’s like a scene from my memory. 1. Original
