This is a scarce English-language edition of the catalogue published on the occasion of the major retrospective of the Brazilian photographer's work at the Fondation Cartier in Paris in 2001.
Alair Gomes (1921–1992) was a Rio de Janeiro-based photographer, philosopher, and critic who, working largely in obscurity during his lifetime, spent the 1970s and '80s making an extraordinary body of black-and-white photographs of young men on the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana and from the window of his apartment overlooking the shor. The book gathers his best-known series plus an interview between Gomes and the collector Joaquim Paiva. The book was designed by Larry Kazal in Paris with silvered endpapers and gray tipped-in section pages.
