Offered for your consideration is a vintage Garland combination ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil, USA-manufactured c.1978. For those unfamiliar with the brand, Garland has been making quality pens in Rhode Island since the early 1960’s but the company’s roots go back decades earlier.

The main focus of Garland’s business is marketing and advertising pens/pencils, typically their flared “bubble top” with logo design. This uncommon Garland dispenses with the flare top and, instead, features a ballpoint pen at bottom and propelling pencil up top. It bears the logo of a company or institution named WEBB on the clip

So, please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this uncommon Garland combo pen/pencil should be yours.

This Garland combination pen and pencil is in clean, excellent condition. It measures 5⅝” long by 5/16” wide. The chrome-plated metal cap and barrel have no dents, dings, or scratches, just some typical light desktop and usage marks from the years. Plus, the clip rests properly on the cap with no gap and the unobtrusive logo emblem is in nice shape as well. Overall, this old Garland presents exceptionally well.

What’s more, it has a twist-actuated mechanism which works very smoothly, without fail, to extend and retract the pen point. However, the mini ballpoint refill is empty or dry. So, the new owner will have to supply their own refill which shouldn’t be difficult to find at most office supply stores, eBay, etc.

Plus, the pencil uses 0.9mm (.036”) lead and works reliably with the same twist action on its end. And what I believe is the original eraser is present, but is likely due for replacement because of age. This all-metal Garland pencil has excellent balance, ample mass, and feels terrific on paper. Lastly, Garland guarantees their writing instruments forever, which shows they have confidence in the build quality!
