S Reynolds Hole, Dean of Rochester (1819–1904) – popularly known as Dean Hole – first published his classic 'A Book About Roses', subtitled 'How to Grow and Show Them', in 1869. It ran into numerous editions, with several revisions, updates and changes in illustrations over the years. This 1909 edition (the 25th impression) has fine decorative binding, and nine illustrations in the text, including a drawing by John Leech, the rest of the plates being reproductions of watercolours and pen & ink drawings by George Elgood (1851–1943). There are also some engraved diagrams in the text with regard to the showing of roses, at which Dean Hole became an expert.
