Here is an Absolutely Beautiful, Very Rare & Very Desirable Vintage Mid Century c1951 OOP (Long, Out-of-Print) Inspirational Color Halftone Lithographic Print Smaller Version of Jesus Christ on the Cross titled, “Christ of St. John of the Cross” (AKA “Christ in Perspective”), after the 1950 monochromatic drawing study by the world-famous prominent surrealist painter, ‘Salvador Dalí’ (Spanish, 1904-1989), whose printed signature ‘G Dalí’, appears lower-middle below Christ’s feet in the image area (in circle)—From 1929, he would often sign his work ‘G Dalí’ in recognition of his muse, lover and eventually his wife, Gala, because of her influence and their partnership. Publisher & Print Info: The publishers trademark logo, copyright & name, ‘Copyright New York Graphic Society Ltd.’, appears printed lower-left in the corner; The artist’s name, birth date, title of the piece, medium, size & collection info, ‘Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904- ) CHRIST OF ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS, Drawing, 30” x 40”, 76 x 101 cm., Collection of Mr. & Mrs. A. Reynolds Morse’, appears printed lower-middle; And the printer & inventory info, ‘Printed in Holland 4666’, appears printed lower-right respectively (the larger version’s inventory number was 7666). The philanthropists Mr. & Mrs. Albert Reynolds Morse diligently collected Dali’s work and they became close friends with Salvador and his wife Gala. With their extensive and valuable collection, they founded the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, FL in 1982, which is dedicated to the works of Dalí and is said to be the world's most comprehensive collection of Dalí’s works. The Print is on a nice medium-heavier weight cream-colored laid paper stock and has been long Out-of-Print (OOP) with the New York Graphic Society.

Dali’s Inspiration for the Image, the 1951 Oil Painting & Its History:From Dalí’s initial studies, he painted a large oil painting of the scene in 1951 which is in the permanent collection of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow. On the bottom of his initial studies for the painting, Dalí explained its inspiration:

“In the first place, in 1950, I had a 'cosmic dream’ in which I saw this image in color and which in my dream represented the 'nucleus of the atom.’ This nucleus later took on a metaphysical sense; I considered it 'the very unity of the universe,’ the Christ!”
History Con’t… In order to create the figure of Christ, Dalí had Hollywood stuntman Russell Saunders suspended from an overhead gantry, so he could see how the body would appear from the desired angle and also envisage the pull of gravity on the human body. The depicted body of water is the bay of Port Lligat, Dalí's residence at the time of the painting.

The painting depicts Jesus Christ on the cross in a darkened sky floating over a body of water complete with a boat and fishermen. Although it is a depiction of the crucifixion, it is devoid of nails, blood, and a crown of thorns, because, according to Dalí, he was convinced by a dream that these features would mar his depiction of Christ. Also in a dream, the importance of depicting Christ in the extreme angle evident in the painting was revealed to him. The painting and intellectual property rights were acquired for Glasgow Corporation in 1952 by Tom Honeyman, then the Director of Glasgow Museums. Honeyman bought the painting for Ł8,200, a price considered high at the time although it was less than the Ł12,000 catalogue price, and included the copyright, which has earned Glasgow Museums back the original cost many times over. The purchase was controversial and a petition against it, arguing that the money should be spent on exhibition space for local artists, was presented to the City Council by students at Glasgow School of Art. The controversy caused Honeyman and Dalí to become friends, corresponding with each other for many years after the original acquisition.

The painting first went on display at the city's Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on 23 June 1952. In 1961, a visitor attacked the painting with a stone and tore the canvas with his hands. It was successfully restored over several months by conservators at Kelvingrove and returned to public display. In 1993, the painting was moved to the city’s St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art, but returned to Kelvingrove for its reopening in July, 2006. It won a poll to decide Scotland’s favourite painting in 2006, with 29% of the vote.

The painting is known as the Christ of Saint John of the Cross, because its design is based on a drawing by the 16th-century Spanish friar John of the Cross. The composition of Christ is also based on a triangle and circle (the triangle is formed by Christ's arms; the circle is formed by Christ’s head). The triangle, since it has three sides, can be seen as a reference to the Trinity, and the circle may be an allusion to Platonic thought. The circle represents Unity: all things do exist in the “three” but in the four, merry they be. (Source: Wikipedia, “Christ of St. John of the Cross”)

Size & Condition: The sheet size with small margins is 13-5/8” x 16”, Image size is 10-5/8” x 14”. The Print is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade. The Print has been tucked away in our archive amongst other prints & lithos since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. No tears & no foxing. No real or significant damage at all on the print with the tiny & completely negligible exceptions of: Extremely minimal (only a couple) very small & very slight crescent-creases here & there on the sheet which are hardly noticeable and aren’t even really worth mentioning; Ultra-minimal outer margin edge-wear with some dents & dings here & there (mostly along top edge) and tiny dog-ear bends in the outer margin corners—all of which are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Negligible/no real or noticeable toning of the paper stock from age, especially amidst the cream color of the laid paper stock itself. The two small brown-ish spots in the upper right cross & hand shadow area are not foxing, and are actually printed from the original drawing by Dalí (as seen & confirmed with a jeweler’s loupe), and do appear on other duplicate copies & versions of this particular print. This vintage mid-century print has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
