Offered for your consideration is one (1) vintage Jensen E-400 heavy Alnico magnet 1½ inch Sonodome tweeter removed from my OPC Model 23 speakers, USA-manufactured in 1976. Per the EIA source/date code on the large magnet cover, “2207619”, this tweeter was made by Jensen (220) in the 19th week of 1976.
This is the same high frequency driver that Jensen used in other OPC (Optimum Performance Control) series speakers, the 24 and 25, and also the Spectrum-series 530, 540, and 550. I believe it is practically identical to the E-400 in the Model LS-5, LS-6, and possibly some other Jensen speakers from this production era.
So, please see the large photos that I’ve taken and read the remaining description to decide if this superlative Jensen high frequency driver should be yours.
This E-400 tweeter is in clean, excellent condition. The radiating surface with 170° dispersion angle is in flawless shape, well-protected behind the acoustically transparent metal grate. Plus, the black-enameled steel faceplate is also in great shape, while the purely decorative cosmetic orange foam ring had dried up and fallen off over the years as is typical. Lastly, the double-type +/- terminals measure the industry-standard .205”, are marked for polarity, and have never been soldered on the spades. All-in-all, this Jensen tweeter is remarkably well-preserved.
Most importantly, it’s been fully tested and sounds very strong, clear, and detailed. It's rated to an impressive 25kHz—the highest of any Jensen driver that I remember seeing—so there’s plenty of beyond-audibility sparkle. Plus, the large Alnico magnet (the size you’d be more apt to find on an 8”-10” woofer) brings the warmth of tone coveted by audiophiles in addition to 90 watt power handling (when used in the larger OPC 25). Also, I tested its DC resistance at 7.3-7.5Ω, right in line with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. And, the faceplate measures 4¾” diameter, it stands around 2” tall (incl. the raised dome-protection cage), and the mounting holes are spaced 3⅛” adjacent / 4½” diagonal apart, c-t-c.
This is a great find if your Jensen OPC 23, 24, 25 or other suitable model has a blown 1½” dome tweeter and will have your cherished speakers sounding their best again in no time. Long discontinued, and becoming increasingly rare in perfect shape, it’s a smart spare to have around just in case!
