The Volkswagen Golf Mk3 VR6 Carat combined two of the early 1990s’ more interesting engineering and equipment stories in a single car. The VR6 engine was genuinely innovative — a narrow-angle 2.8-litre V6 designed to occupy the same footprint as the Golf’s existing four-cylinder installation, its fifteen-degree angle between cylinder banks producing a unit that blurred the line between an in-line six and a conventional V arrangement and delivered around 174hp with a refinement and breadth of power that no four-cylinder rival could match.
The Carat trim level added luxury specification to that mechanical package — a top-of-the-range Golf that justified its premium over the standard range with equipment levels and interior quality considerably above the class norm for the period. In Dragon Green the Mk3’s smooth, rounded bodywork carries a distinctive and unusual colour that marks the Carat out from more conventional Golf choices. Otto Mobile’s 1:12 resin model captures the car at approximately 34cm in length, individually numbered in a limited edition of 1500. Officially licensed.
